Mercedes-Benz 540K (1936 to 1943) Mercedes-Benz introduced the 540K in 1936. Also known as the W29, the 540K was one of the company's most prestigious models. As the successor to the famed 500K, the 540K surpassed the previous model in power and prestige. A series of grand tourers, 540Ks were offered in a variety of open top and hard top variants. Nibel then came up with a larger five-litre engine that gave 100/160 bhp, and introduced it in 1934 as the Typ 500K, “K” in this case meaning kompressor or supercharger. The wheelbase was extended to 3,290 mm (129.5 inches), and a range of cabriolets, roadsters and sedans was offered.
