Fords recommened cambelt changes for 98 onward zetecs is 100,000 miles, proir to that it was 80,000 so round about that sort of milage is a good time, have to say dont hear of that many snapped timing belts on mondeos. 213 posts · Joined 2005. #1 · Jan 27, 2006. A friend of mine who builds performance engines for Renaults has agreed to do a cambelt change on our mondeo (in return for me helping him out). He has told me to buy all the parts he'll need beforehand. So i've been fords earlier and brought:
cambelt kit £79.90. Water pump £76. Aux drive belts £20. A/Freeze £15. Labour £152.75. Tital £343. Fiat aren't keen on timing marks, preferring tools to align/synch the camshaft/ crankshaft so you quite simply make your own marks before you take the belts off. It's not difficult. On RAC advice, the vehicle has been taken to the nearest Ford dealership. At this moment it's waiting for diagnosis, suggested 3-4 weeks as dealership is so busy.
If the teeth on the cambelt wear they can slip, changing their position on the camshaft and/or crankshaft. This is known as ‘jumping a tooth’, and at best causes incorrect timing (meaning the engine will not run correctly), or at worst, again, collision between valves and pistons.
